Hitting and damaging buried services when excavating is costly and potentially very dangerous. Using our Cable Avoidance Tools to locate buried pipes and cables can help ensure the chances of this happening are minimised. Straightforward to operate, battery powered “C.A.T detectors” and Signal Generators are available to hire from both branches.
Cable Avoidance Tool
When combined with a Signal Generator and accessories, the Cable Avoidance Tool becomes a versatile, all round pipe and cable locating and tracing package. Robustly made, equipped with LCD meter, detachable loudspeaker and easy-to-operate fingertip controls these detectors are ideal for site use where the necessity to be able to detect buried services quickly and with confidence is paramount.
Our Cable Avoidance Tools have three classic detection modes each with their own unique advantages:
The POWER mode is the quickest way to detect most buried electricity cables by detecting the signal created by the electrical current itself.
The RADIO mode detects re-radiated “radio” type signals that are often present on metal pipes and cables allowing their position to be determined using just the Cable Avoidance Tool alone.
The GENERATOR mode is used to detect the signal applied to a metal pipe or cable by a Signal Generator. In addition the Generator mode can be used to detect the signal being transmitted by a Sonde for non-metallic pipe tracing.
A Signal Generator is a vital accompaniment to a Cable Avoidance Tool and significantly increases the number of buried services that can be detected.
The 33kHz SGA or SGV Signal Generator can energise a buried metal pipe or cable either by ‘direct connection’ by means of a DC electrical cable (included) to the target pipe or cable – or the simpler ‘induction’ method (placing the generator adjacent to the pipe or cable) from above ground. Direct connection allows specific pipes or cables to be individually traced, identified and their depths measured, whilst use of the Induction method allows previously unknown metal pipes or cables to be detected and traced. When switched on – the signal generator emits an audible signal which is transmitted directly to the identified pipe or cable. The signal can then be traced along the length of the cable/pipe run by the operator using a C.A.T Detector switched to the Generator setting.
Used primarily in conjunction with a C.A.T Detector the Radio Sonde has a 5m range and can be attached to either drain rods or flexi-rods for tracing conduits or drains. A spring coupling adapter can be used with drain rods for greater manoeuvrability. Our units are well known industry standard waterproof transmitters and are each powered by a single AA battery. These handy units are compatible with all types of 33kHz cable locators.
Our Metal Detectors are rugged, accurate tools offering the ability to locate underground metal objects quickly. Easy to use, these detectors have a fascia mounted loudspeaker including a socket for optional headphones and are fitted with user friendly push button controls housing LED indicators. Stems are collapsible with twist lock length adjustment. A heavy duty waterproof coil and comfortable hand grip with arm rest, make these detectors untiring to use over extended periods.
MultiScanner – Studwork & AC Electrical Detector
Our MultiScanner quickly and easily locates the edges and center of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and ceilings. It also locates metal as well as live AC electrical wiring. A 4-mode switch makes it easy to change functions, while the ultra-bright display screen, SpotLite Pointing System, and audio tone all indicate the location of the target. The signal strength indicator helps to distinguish between shallow and deep targets.
- Stud Scan mode locates the edges and center of wood or metal studs up to 3/4 inch (19 mm) deep.
- DeepScan® mode doubles the scanning depth to 1 1/2 inches (38 mm).
- An ultra-bright LCD screen indicates direction, edges and centre of studs.
- AC Scan finds and traces live, unshielded electrical wiring up to 2 inches deep.
- Metal mode detects non-ferrous metal, such as copper pipes, up to 1 1/2 inches (38 mm) deep, and ferrous metal, such as rebar, up to 3 inches (76 mm) deep.
- WireWarning detection indicates the presence of live, unshielded electrical wire up to 2 inches (51 mm) deep in stud and metal scanning modes.
- ACT™ (Auto Correcting Technology) automatically corrects common user errors, such as when scanning begins over a stud.
